Café del Puerto in Las Galletas, a small but popular restaurant known for being situated on a terrace over the water in the local port, will soon change their floor.
While it may sound like a pretty trivial thing to announce it is actually a decision which will affect people who regularly visit the restaurant as well as former clients who don't. The wooden floor has gaps between the boards, allowing guests to see the water through it - a popular detail among those who like the marine style theme. However, this unusual feature has also proven to have its downsides.
"No expensive jewellery has been dropped into the sea yet", says owner Gerardo del Valle Moral, "but there has been quite an amount of coins. Normally people don't mind too much as it represents little value. We haven't had to dive to get things up yet", he laughs.
However, the change of floor is not down to money being lost into the sea but rather health issues and comfort for female clients. "Ladies in Tenerife prefer to wear skirts or dresses when eating out, and especially at night we have had many women making us aware of how the gaps in the floor function as a cold air ventilation fan", explains Mr. Moral.
The necessary measures taken by the owners at Café del Puerto to accommodate female guests is expected to take place in June, so if you are a fan of the old floor with gaps you better hurry up before the gaps are history.
